Fortnite Battle Royale first came out in September 2017. Since then, it’s gained popularity, increasing in more players, more revenue, and setting records that nobody could’ve anticipated.
So why is Fortnite so popular? If you haven’t heard of it before, you’re probably living under a rock, because this game easily went viral in only several months. It’s popularity come from several reasons which make this game appealing to any age, gender, or race. Fortnite is a free-to-play game that involves 100 players going into a game filled with weapons and consumables, and only 1 player comes out alive, otherwise known as a victory royale. Despite being a free-to-play game, Fortnite has received very positive reviews from the gameplay, the in-game cosmetics you could buy, emotes, harvesting tools, seasonal events, and more! If you’re going into a battlefield, you might as well look good while doing it.
Collaborations give players the opportunity to let people connect a virtual game to real life. So far, Epic Games, the developers of the Fortnite, have combined with Marvel to introduce Thanos to the game, and as of November 4th, have combined with NFL to allow players to sport their favorite football sports team in America. Streamers and celebrities around the world have also brought this game to where it is today, such as the teaming up of famous streamer Ninja and famous rapper Drake.
Fortnite is distinctive from other battle royale games because it offers unique in-game mechanics such as allowing the player to build, which creates memorable and dynamic gameplay to truly show off skill. Other battle royale games such as H1Z1 and PUBG don’t do this, and struggle to keep up with better games such as Fortnite. This Battle Royale game also offers exclusive cosmetics to certain regions or lock them to certain console to let player strive to stand out from the rest. Competitive players would also enjoy keeping up with their overall player stats, participating in tournaments, and dueling against their friends. The game is also able to be digitally downloaded, and shows nothing that could mentally traumatize kids later in life.
For those who haven’t tried it or have never seen it, Fortnite’s less popular gamemode called Save the World (STW) allows players to take on the role of a protagonist whose mission is to literally save the world. While this mode is not free-to-play, it offers many more mechanics such as crafting weapons and ammunition, building a homebase, rescuing survivors and defenders, and destroying zombie-like monsters called husks. STW allows players to customize their characters with skins and classes that enhance and diversify their gameplay, and each mission offers rewards to help you level up and persevere through the husks and the storm alike.
Overall, Fortnite is an amazing game that hardly gets old and lets players be unique in their own way. The game supports many play styles and has two different modes for different kinds of players.
