Freedom of Speech & Liberty in Manchester High School By: Samantha Lane

Manchester high school in New Jersey has made a significant change that could change the history of their school. The school colors are royal blue and gold, where on graduation the females wear the gold and the males wear the royal blue, in order to share their love, gratitude, and spirit for the place they called a home for four years. But as of 2019 things are beginning to change. Three female students did not feel that the ordered color pattern for the genders we fair because they do not classify themselves as females. The principal, Mr. Adams, told the students that they could wear whatever color they feel comfortable in and the color they identify with. Something that could of been easily solved with his statement went to a whole new level. These girls felt like they did not achieve the justice they were looking for, so they went straight to the board of education. The board felt like the girls had a strong enough statement and that there side should be heard and be put into action. The board decided to make a change to the graduation attire but changing the cap and gowns completely. Instead of the regular royal blue and gold for each gender, they now have a blue gown with a gold sash for everyone.

A meeting with the seniors took place to announce the new change for graduation and the response was not very pleasant. Students who were looking forward to their gowns stood up from their seat to try to speak their peace, but they were told to sit down and be quiet. The students who tried making a stand for what they believed in during the meeting were silenced so they were not able to speak their opinion. Everyone is entitled to the freedom of speech but the ones who were told to sit down and be quiet did not receive that right. Manchester high school has been around for over 45 years. So for 45 years, they have worn the same royal blue and gold gowns. Parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles have all graduated from this high school and expected to see their children graduate in the same gowns they did. Now they will not be able to because of three students. The majority of the graduating class is up in arms and plan to boycott and walk out of graduation to make a statement.
Students have said, “It is unfair to the ones who wanted to graduate in the original colors and now we won’t be.” “Our parents wanted to see us graduate in the same colors they did and now they won’t be able to all because of three people.” After being told they are not, they tried to speak their piece they were silenced and denied to protest against the new movement. Everyone in Manchester Township is up in arms about this movement including the parents and there is nothing that they could do to change the minds of the board to bring back the original tradition.
